Closer to Home
Caring for kids closer to home
Last year alone, families from Surrey, White Rock, Langley and Delta logged more than 24,000 visits to Vancouver for pediatric outpatient care. To care for more kids closer to home, we need to transform the Children’s Health Centre, doubling our outpatient clinic space and increasing the inpatient beds by 25 per cent.
Last year, more than 50,000 children from across Fraser Health were treated at Surrey Memorial Hospital. It’s dramatic increase from where we were 10 years ago, but given the steady rise in population, it’s simply not enough.
Due to space constraints in our Children’s Health Centre, the vast majority of children from the Fraser Valley have to travel to Vancouver to see a pediatric specialist.
Thanks to successful recruitment over the past decade, Surrey now has 11 specialized pediatricians, but the outpatient area in our 16-year-old Children’s Health Centre is too small to increase the number of clinics.
We’re raising funds to double the clinic space, make room for more inpatient beds, and create a dedicated day surgery area. The expansion will support family-centred care, with a child-friendly environment that’s inviting for children and families. Families will also have easy access to a brand-new, state-of-the-art outside play area.
