Over $100,000 Raised for Cancer Surgery in Surrey
A special 35th anniversary concert by the Vancouver Zion Mission Choir has raised $101,340 for cancer prevention surgery at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
Under the leadership of Surrey residents Drs. Peter and Stephanie Chung, the choir unites the voices of 170 members of the Lower Mainland’s Korean community. The adult and children’s choirs have entertained international audiences over the years. In the past decade, this has included an annual major choral event to raise funds for charitable causes from around the world.
Held at the Chan Centre on October 9, this year’s event, which included performances from the adult and children’s choirs as well as a guest children’s choir from South Korea, was the first to support a local charity. A capacity audience of approximately 1,000 people enjoyed the concert. Dr. Victoria Lee, Fraser Health’s Vice-President, Population Health and Chief Medical Health Officer, brought greetings in both English and Korean.
The funds raised at the event, as well as $60,000 contributed by donors inspired by the choir’s support for the cause, will make it possible to purchase Radio Frequency Ablation equipment for procedures to help prevent esophageal cancer. The device will be used by Surrey’s Thoracic (chest) Surgery Program, a local program with an international reputation for innovative work.
Dr. Peter Chung explained that the choir chose this program because members wanted to support a good cause close to home. “Members of our choir have been impacted by cancer, including lung cancer, so raising money for thoracic surgery really resonated with us.”
Surrey Hospital & Outpatient Centre Foundation President & CEO Jane Adams thanked the choir. “We are honoured that the choir chose to support cancer surgery in Surrey for this special 35th anniversary concert.”
Over the years, the choir has performed across Canada, as well as Korea and the United States. The choir’s annual fundraising concert has supported causes that include: First Steps Canada (providing nutrition for children in North Korea), the Tanzania Water Well Project, the Paraguay Orphanage Mission and the world famine relief fund.
